Ford Kuga PHEV: how to charge and specifications

The new   Ford Kuga  plug-in hybrid will be available from 2021. Four different versions (Trend, Titanium, ST-line and Titanium X) will be launched and the recommended retail price will range between €33,325 and €38,125. This car will compete with the existing and new plug-in hybrid SUVs. If you are interested in this car and are curious about its charging options, be sure to read this article.

Power of the battery

The car's battery has a capacity of 14.4kWh. This translates into a theoretical driving range of 56 kilometers ( WLTP ). However, the actual driving range of the car is lower because of weather conditions, driving style and many other factors. You can charge the Ford Kuga plug-in hybrid in several ways: through a regular wall outlet, through a charging station at home and at work, or through a public charging station.

How long does it take to charge the battery?

Charging speed will depend on how the battery is charged. The Ford Kuga plug-in hybrid charges slower at a wall outlet than at a charging station. Since the car's battery can be charged within one night, it is not necessary to install a charging station. But when you want to get the most out of the battery, it is recommended to install a charging station. Through a charging station, the battery of the Ford Kuga can charge in about 4 hours. If you use the wall outlet to charge the battery, the battery will take more than 6 hours to be fully charged. So if you like to drive with a full battery, it is interesting to install a charging station to quickly recharge the battery.

Besides speed, there are numerous other reasons why it is best to choose a charging station when driving a plug-in hybrid car, read them   here .

How to charge?

The Ford Kuga plug-in hybrid works with the European standard connector  type 2 . If you want to charge the Ford Kuga via a charging station, you will need such a plug.

The connection to charge is at the front on the left side of the car. When you want to install a charging station at home or at work, it is important to take this into account.

Our advice

For the Ford Kuga plug-in hybrid, Pluginvest recommends installing a 22kW charging station both at home and at work. However, this type of charging station can charge at a higher power than the Ford Kuga can handle. But when you buy an all-electric car in the future, you won't need to purchase a new, more powerful charging station. To fully utilize such a 22kW charging station, however, you must have a  3-phase  connection in your electrical cabinet. This is not possible everywhere, but Pluginvest can also connect this charging station 1-phase (for now) so you can use the unit as a 1-phase 3.7kW unit.

If you are also interested in charging on the go, Pluginvest recommends purchasing a charging card for public charging stations. The charging card offered by Pluginvest works with a flat monthly cost (other distributors of charging cards charge a surcharge per kWh charged) and can be used in more than 150,000 public charging stations in Europe.
