Parking lots in Brussels will be obliged to provide charging stations as of 2025

Legislation regarding charging stations in Brussels car parks has been determined

Brussels has decided to provide mandatory charging stations in car parks of more than 10 cars starting in 2025. This legal framework already exists in Flanders, but now Brussels has also decided on clear legislation for charging points in car parks.  This was critically necessary to achieve the goal of 22,000 charging points by 2035. Today, Brussels has 1,972 public charging points. A decree was already approved last year requiring all new car parks to have a certain number of charging installations, but now the final amendments to that decree have been laid down.

The Brussels government's decision stipulated not only the number of charging stations to be installed, but also the safety standards surrounding the installation of charging stations in car parks, such as the inspection of the charging stations.

Free consultancy is available regarding the installation of charging stations. Both citizens and businesses can make use of this consultancy.

Het wettelijke kader

This decision currently only affects Brussels car parks with more than 10 parking spaces. Once the legislation comes into effect, these car parks will also be subject to inspections and will also have to be able to produce the necessary environmental permits. The timeline is as follows for the different types of car parks.

For office car parks
  • From 1 January 2025: 10% of the parking spots must be equipped with a charge point (min. 2 charge points)

  • From 1 January 2030: 20% of the parking spots must be equipped with a charge point

  • From 1 January 2035: 30% of the parking spots must be equipped with a charge point

For public car parks
    • From 1 January 2025: 5% of the parking spots must be equipped with a charge point (min. 2 charge points)

    • From 1 January 2030: 10% of the parking spots must be equipped with a charge point

    • From 1 January 2035: 20% of the parking spots must be equipped with a charge point

For residential car parks
  • From 1 January 2025: A charge point in every parking space of residents who indicate that they drive an electric car.
