Update 12/02/2024: The premium is only valid for 1 year. The car must be purchased by the end of 2024 at the latest. You can receive the premium from 12 February through an application at the electronic counter of the Flemish government.
The Flemish government has decided to introduce a €5,000 premium for the purchase of electric vehicles. Although this premium was cancelled in 2020 due to efficiency concerns, it has now been revived to give individuals a boost. Minister Lydia Peeters stresses that this incentive is not aimed at luxury brands such as Tesla or BMW X3, but rather at people who want to drive sustainably on a smaller budget.
How do you qualify for this bonus?
Individuals as well as non-profit organisations and providers of shared mobility will be able to use this premium. To keep the premium fair and accessible, the government has imposed a cap. The premium will be available from 2024 and will only apply to electric vehicles with a purchase price of less than €40,000 (incl. VAT). There are currently around 30 models on the market that fall below that ceiling. And more models under €40,000 will be launched next year.
The premium will be available for the following vehicle categories:
Passenger car (M1)
Van with a weight of less than 3500 kg (N1)
Heavy micro-town cars (L7e-C)
Plug-in hybrids are NOT eligible! The premium only applies to fully electric cars and fuel cell cars.
Premium only valid in 2024
The premium will only be valid in 2024. Thus, the electric vehicle must be purchased at the latest before the end of 2024. Please note that the premium can never exceed 25% of the purchase price. The premium will then be reduced in proportion to the purchase price of the vehicle.

How do you submit an application?
The Flemish Region fully covers the premium, but you have to follow a few steps to apply for it:
Register within 90 days of signing the sales contract. You do this via the website of the Flemish governement.
Make sure you have the following details to hand:
your identification and contact details
a copy of the sales contract,
The account number into which the premium should be paid.
After registration, you must submit the following documents within 90 days:
a copy of the invoice and proof of payment showing that you meet all the requirements
A copy of your vehicle's registration certificate with the chassis number.
Ev models available for less than 40,000 euros
Hyundai Kona Electric
The Kona Electric starts at around €37,000. For this price you get the 39 kWh version with a range of 305 km. You can also opt for the 64 kWh version, which is also within your budget. This gives you a range of 484 km.
BYD Atto 3
Also the Chinese manufacturer BYDwhich has been on the European market since last year, has low-cost models available. The BYD atto 3 is available from €30,948 and has a range of 320 kilometres with a powerful 204 hp.
Volvo EX30 (from 2024)
This will be a compact electric SUVwhich will be slightly cheaper than the other Volvo models. It is reported that this electric car will be available for around 35,000 Euros.
Fiat 600-e (from 2024)
This compact city carwill be available from €36,000. The range is more than 400 kilometres. DC fast charging can be done at 100kW, so you'll have enough to charge in half an hour.
Also for second-hand cars
The good news is that the premium applies not only to new electric vehicles, but also to used ones. For the years 2024 and 2025, the premium will be €3,000 and €2,000 respectively. This initiative is designed to prevent the first generation of electric commercial vehicles coming onto the market from disappearing en masse, wiping out all the environmental and climate benefits in one fell swoop.
A good step towards sustainable mobility
Minister Lydia Peeters points out that the price difference between electric and petrol cars, both new and used, is still significant. To further encourage the transition to zero emissions, this financial support has been introduced to lower the threshold for consumers.
To support this measure, the minister has set a budget of 20 million euro .
